Scotland’s capital is packed with things to see and do which is why so many visitors travel to Edinburgh every year.
Visitors can choose from traditional visits where they learn about Scottish history or hit the clubs, bars and music venues for fun nights out. We thought we would look at some of the best options for visitors to the city to enjoy.
First of all, any visit to Edinburgh should definitely take in Edinburgh Castle. Tours will let you take in the incredible history of the Castle and the views are some of the best you will see of the city.
The Royal Mile which leads you up to the castle is packed with great shops that will have every traditional Scottish item you would need from wool and knitwear shops to whisky and more.
The National Museum of Scotland is also located in central Edinburgh so that gives visitors another great option to enjoy some culture.
If animals are of interest to you, you might want to take in Edinburgh Zoo. Located a mile or so out of the city centre you can either walk or get a bus or taxi. Zoo’s are a contentious subject with animal rights campaigners unhappy at the captivity of any animal. Modern zoos, including Edinburgh Zoo are a lot more aware of animal rights and they champion a number of animal conservation schemes which will put some minds at ease.
If you want to make the most of Edinburgh’s shopping options then Princes Street should be perfect for you. All the winding streets leading up to the old town also have some great independent shops that have some great unique options.
If you happen to be visiting at the end of the summer you will also want to make the most of the Edinburgh Festival. Thousands of artists and performers descend on the city giving you an endless choice of live shows or street performances.
You will also want to check out some of the fantastic tours you can find along the Royal Mile too. With historic walking tours, Ghost walks and exclusive access to areas of the city that have long become blocked off it is a great way to find out about the more interesting things that have happened here.
With so many excellent options, a trip to Edinburgh will have something for people of all ages to enjoy. Taking the time to explore the city yourself will open your eyes to everything there is to do here. There are some great restaurants, bars and pubs that you will also want to visit.
When you visit Edinburgh we always recommend checking out the Grassmarket area which has a great community feel to it. There are some great places to eat and drink round here with some excellent shops worth investigating too.
